Unakoti tourist spot holding miraculous stories of ancient Tripura
Unakoti is the unique wonder of Tripura tourism. With which Tripura’s antiquity and stories of some miraculous powers are connected. There are many stories that have been around for ages. Where is Unakoti, how was this tourist spot discovered? I will tell you all through today’s writing.
Where is this Unakoti located?
Before that it is necessary to know where this place is. Unakoti district is one of the 8 districts in the North Eastern state of Tripura, India. And after this famous tourist center Unakoti, this district has been named Unakoti. Unakoti is located at a distance of about 141 km from Agartala, the capital of Tripura. It takes about 4 hours and more to reach Unakoti by road. On the other hand, if you are traveling by rail, first you have to go from Agartala railway station to Kumarghat. After that you have to take a small vehicle from Kumarghat to Unakoti.
It is a bit time consuming in terms of travel but you won’t feel like you have wasted any time in this whole trip.
The stone statue also seems to speak in this place. Maybe this is a special reason behind the miracle. Our small hilly state Tripura has many tourist attractions. But this is the specialty of Unakoti which makes it much more attractive than other tourist centers.
The mystery of the name Unakoti
There are various opinions when looking for the reason for the formation of Unakoti names. Some say that this place was earlier called Unakoti hence the name of the tourist center is Unakoti. According to some, there are 1 less than 1 crore idols of gods and goddesses, hence the name is Unakoti.
The word Unakoti literally means “one less than a crore”, in the native language of the people of Tripura it is called ‘Subrai Khung’.
It is said to be an ancient Shaivite place. There are many idols of gods and goddesses carved in stone. According to some, there are fewer than one crore idols. However, many local priests have rejected that information. Unakoti has been included in the 2022 UNESCO World Heritage Temporary List. Another feature of this is that the whole tourist area is made by cutting mountains. It is estimated to be more than 5000 years old. There are several interesting stories surrounding this Unakoti.
History and folklore about Unakoti
There are several stories about this mountain. One of the most fascinating stories created centered on Lord Shiva.
In that story, it is said that once Devadidev Mahadeva left Tripura for Varanasi. At that time 1 crore gods including Mahadev were on that tour. Tired gods fell asleep on this hill at night. Everyone was supposed to leave for Varanasi before sunrise the next morning. But none other than Devadeva Mahadeva woke up before sunrise. Annoyed, Mahadev left alone for Varanasi and the remaining 99 lakhs 99 thousand 999 gods fell asleep at that place. And they never got up and turned to stone there. To protect this legend, the place was named Unakoti.
But many people do not believe this story and consider this just as a rumor.
The priest who worships on this high mountain of Unakoti has been in this mountain for 30 years. According to him, these Unakoti have been located here since Satya Yuga and the idols on this hill are also of Satya Yuga. Various stone and brick staircases also do not seem to date from this period. Moreover, the name of this place was earlier Kailas Dham. Priests also considered it as the place of Mahadev.
Unakoti is easily accessible by rail from anywhere in Tripura. Unakoti can be reached by road from Agartala to Kumar Ghat within a few hours as I have mentioned earlier. However, due to lack of maintenance and care, the place has lost much of its glory. However, efforts are currently being made to fix it. The number of tourists here increases every year during cold season. Besides, many tourists are seen here on holidays. However, due to the very bad condition of the roads, the number of tourists has decreased a lot these days. There will be adversity. But it will not reduce the importance or greatness of the tourist place. If the road is bad, it will be repaired. But these tourist spots will remain the same forever. And this is how the history will be carried from generation to generation. This is probably one of the unique qualities of tourist places in India. Which is not only applicable to Tripura, but all over the country these historical tourist places are carrying special importance. Unakoti of Tripura is one of them.
